Manyas Lake, the Paradise of Birds
Manyas Lake, located in Balıkesir, is also known as “Manyas Bird Paradise”. The lake, with a surface area of 162 square kilometers, is one of the most important stopover areas for many bird species. The lake, whose deepest point is 10 meters, frequently spreads to the surrounding areas, causing contractions and expansions. The waters rise in spring and recede in summer. For this reason, swamps, reed beds, and marshes have formed around the lake.
Manyas Lake, which was declared a National Park in 1959, is extremely important as it lies on the migratory path of birds. Approximately 266 bird species have been identified. It has been determined that 66 of these birds nest in the lake regularly almost every year. The remaining birds regularly stop by the lake while migrating. Tourists are offered bird watching opportunities through cameras placed around the environment at the Bird Watching Center, along with services such as excursions and souvenirs.
The International Bandırma Bird Paradise Culture and Tourism Festival, held annually, draws attention to environmental pollution. Migratory birds feed, rest, and reproduce in the lake. The lake, which is rich in ecological resources, also provides a significant food source for young birds.
