What is the Effect of Scents on Memory?
Scents are present in every moment and environment of our lives. Therefore, as we are in places with many different scents, we may sometimes have to tolerate an unpleasant bad odor. However, if we start to smell the same scents in certain environments repeatedly, our brain will establish a connection between that scent and that environment. Even if a long time passes, when we smell the same scent elsewhere, that environment will immediately come to mind.
We can divide scents into good and bad scents
Since our brain perceives perfume scents, flower scents, and similar scents as pleasant and beautiful, we can easily be in environments with those scents without any discomfort. However, scents that our brain perceives as bad, such as sewage, toilet odors, and similar scents, awaken in us the desire to immediately leave that environment. But as we mentioned, scents ingrained in our memory as a memory do not have a good or bad distinction. We associate places, a house, a car, a street, a workplace, a cafe where we constantly spend time with friends, with the scents within them, and even after years, when we smell them elsewhere, we remember and recall those places. Another example is the perfumes people use. If a person uses a perfume very often and we frequently smell this scent when we meet them, even if a long time has passed, when someone else wearing that scent walks by us, we remember our friend. The same examples can be given for bad odors. A scent we frequently smell in a dirty environment will remind us of that place at different times. As understood from all the examples we have given, the effect of scents on memory is significant.
