WINDS
In summer the winds normally blow from the northwest to the south east on the central and southern Aegean. This wind is commonly called the "meltem" although some areas have a local name such as at Çeşme. Izmir and Kuşadası where it is called the "imbat" in the early and late summer the meltem blows less strongly and there are days of little or no wind at all Generally, the meltem will die at night and then resume the next day around midday although it can also blow day and night for days on end in the gulfs the wind allows the coast to blow from the west and becomes weaker towards the head of the gulfs. Gusts are particularly violent off the north coast of the Gulf of Gökova and the Gulf of Hisarönü. The meltem also comes in a westerly direction along the Mediterranean coast as far as the Gulf of Finike.
Around the Gulf of Antalya there are both land an sea breezes with the latter predominating generally from between south and south west. METEOROLOGICAL INFORMATION FOR SAILORS
The Maritime Forecasting and Broadcasting Centre in Ankara, and the five Regional Martitime Forecasting and Broadcasting Centres in Antalya, İzmir, Samsun, İstanbul and Mersin provide a 24-hour data collection and broadcasting servise. Their weather reports for sea craft include information about winds, wave height, visibility, temperature and other relevant parameters .
These weather reporte are broadcast from VHF transmitters on the 16th channel and 67th channels from coastal meteorological stations at Hopa, Rize, Trabzon, Giresun, Ordu, Sinop, İnebolu, Zonguldak, Kilyos Tekirdağ, Çanakkale, Gökçeada, Ayvalık, Dikili, Çeşme, Kuşadası, BOdrum, Marmaris, Finike, Alanya and Anamur. At 09.00, 12.00, 15.00, 18.00 and 21.00 the weather reports is repeated three times at five minute intervals. Broadcasts from Antalya, Izmir, Istanbul, and Samsun are in English and Turkish.
