THE SARCOPHAGUS OF MOURNING WOMEN:
The Sarcophagus of Mourning Women, another magnificent work of art, was also discovered at the Royal Necropolis of Sidon along with the other sarcophagi displayed in the same hall. It is believed to date back to about 350 B.C., and has the outlook of a classical Ionic temple.
Between the columns supporting the roof of the temple there are 18 figures of women in mourning, each with a different facial expression and poise of the body that tell of a woman's love and devotion to her man, and of her grief. A funeral is depicted on the sides of the lid, and the pedestal is decorated with reliefs of hunting scenes.
