Handmade knotted carpets have developed through the centuries as a characteristic handicraft of the Turkish nation. The two richest antique carpet museums of the world are in Istanbul. Presently, carpets are made in every region of Turkey in accordance with traditional methods. Carpets made with pure wool, wool and cotton or pure silk yarns of various regions from collections of rich variety.
Skilled workmanship, quality raw material, deep rooted traditions, special techniques, patience and months of labour lie at the root of the reputation which Turkish handmade carpets enjoy world over.
In many villages, carpets bearing the regional characteristics are produced at numerous home looms. Also, in many centers rug weaving has developed into an industry with the support of the state. The town of Hereke near Istanbul is the best known handmade silk carpet center of the world.
The carpets of Hereke as well as those produced in large quantities in the cities of Kayseri and Konya are much in demand the world over.
