Cinema
Cinema was first introduced into Turkey in 1896 by Betrand, one of the jesters of Yıldız Palace. The first cinematographic public performance was in 1897. These were the short films of the brothers Lumiere and Pathe. However were the short films of the brothers suspicious of cinema, this branch of art remained ambulant until 1908.
The first permanent cinema in Turkey was opened by Weinberg, the representative of the Brothers Pathe, after the proclamation of the Second Constitution. From that time on, cinema evidenced a slow but regular development.
The first film was shot in our country when the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War. Three days after the Ottoman Government declared war against
Russia, an excited crowd burned the Russian monument at Ayastefanos, Yeşilköy, This incident was filmed
by Fuat Uzkınay, who was a reserve officer at that time. This film, 150 metres in length was the first film production of Turkish cinema.
This department, cooperating with certain German and Austrian purchasing directors, began making documentary and informational films about the War.
Sedat Simavi was the director of the first Turkish art films. These films made in 1917 were : "Pençe" ( The Claw ) and "Casus" (The Spy).
Opera - Ballet
The first opera performed by a foreign company in Turkey was towards the end of the 18th century, in the presence of Sultan Selim II in Topkapi Palace. Other early opera activities in Turkey were the performances of Naum's Opera, who was in the service of the Palace between the years 1840 and 1870. The Mızıka-i Hümayun ( Imperial Orchhestra) and chorus consisted of Turkish members. Naum immediately abought works admired in Europe and presented
them in this theatre. It provided liveliness and development.
